Exploring the Heartbeat of Tennessee’s Music City
Affectionately dubbed “Music City,” Nashville is a place where the strum of a guitar and the twang of a country melody are never far away. This buzzing metropolis, situated on the banks of the Cumberland River, has long been mecca for music lovers, bar-hoppers, and culture-seekers alike. From its world-renowned bars and live music scene to the iconic Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Nashville offers a unique blend of Southern hospitality, history, and entertainment that is sure to captivate any traveller.

Bars and Nightlife
To truly experience Nashville, one must dive headfirst into its legendary bar scene. The main artery of nightlife in the city is Broadway, a neon-lit thoroughfare lined with honky-tonks, rooftop bars, and venues that promise live music every night of the week. It’s here you’ll find some of the most famous watering holes, each with its own character and story. Nudie’s is one particular venue that pumps 7 days a week. Housed over 3 levels in an historic 100 year old building, the bar here spans over 100 feet (30 metres), and is one of the longest bars found in Nashville.

Honky-Tonks and Historic Watering Holes
Honky-tonks are practically synonymous with Nashville. These lively bars feature live country music from before midday to well into the night, and a fabulous way to experience the city. Robert’s Western World, Nashville’s original honky-tonk bar, was our pick during this visit. Complete with plenty of vintage décor in a casual setting, the live music here starts at 10am and finishes well after midnight.
Besides music, we found the menu just as enticing for our casual lunch. With the usual diner-style fare of cheeseburgers, onion rings, chicken tenders and fries, the Nashville twist of a cheese curd basket and infamous “Recession Special” in particular, piqued our interest. With both choosing the latter option, the open kitchen gave us an inkling of meal preparation as we could watch it cooking on the grill. In less than 10 minutes, lunch was served. Our choice turned out to be a Bologna sandwich (two thick pieces of bread toasted with Bologna – Bologna is an American sausage style meat similar to Australia’s Devon/Fritz/Polony, plus lettuce and tomato, was accompanied with potato crisps, a can of PBR beer, and a MoonPie – marshmallow sandwiched between two biscuits and covered in chocolate – a little like an Australian Wagon Wheel). Our tasty lunch was served in a no-frills cardboard tray lined with a serviette and was great value at a budget friendly US$5.

Music is the lifeblood of Nashville. While the city is most famous for its country roots, its music scene is far more diverse than many realise. From bluegrass and blues, to rock, pop, and jazz, you’ll hear it all as you wander the streets. And it’s not just confined to clubs and concert halls. We found city streets are alive with the sound of buskers and street performers, especially along Broadway and in city parks. It’s not uncommon to stumble upon a talented singer-songwriter or a lively band playing for passers-by, adding to the city’s infectious energy.

Country Music Hall of Fame
No trip to Nashville would be complete without a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. We spent hours at this sprawling institution that’s located in the heart of downtown, as it’s dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of country music. With its striking modern architecture and vast collection of artefacts, the museum invites guests to journey through the genre’s evolution.
Inside, you’ll find everything from Elvis Presley’s gold Cadillac to costumes worn by Dolly Parton and Taylor Swift. We particularly loved some of the museum’s permanent exhibits that trace the roots of country music from its Appalachian origins to its global influence today. The museum is full of interactive displays, listening stations, and video installations across a few levels, that all bring the stories of legendary artists to life. Temporary exhibits include contemporary stars and special themes, ensuring there’s always something new to discover.
We found one museum highlight is the Hall of Fame Rotunda, where the names of country music’s greatest figures are immortalised in bronze. Here, visitors can pay tribute to icons like Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, and Johnny Cash, whose contributions have shaped not only country music, but American culture itself.

While bars, music, and museums are the stars of the show, Nashville’s appeal extends to its food and broader culture. The city is renowned for its hot chicken – a fiery, crispy fried chicken dish that packs a punch. You’ll find it served up in humble diners and trendy restaurants alike.
